What Is an Ijaazah — and Why Does It Matter?

An Ijaazah (إجازة) is a formal licence granted by a qualified Quran scholar, certifying that a student has recited the Quran completely and accurately — and that the scholar grants them permission to teach and transmit the Quran to others. More than just a certificate, an Ijaazah represents a living chain (sanad) of oral transmission that connects directly back to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.

Types of Ijaazah We Offer

Ijaazah in Hafs ‘an ‘Asim

Ijaazah in the Ten Qirat

Assessment & Prerequisites Verification

Before being accepted into the Ijaazah program, your recitation is assessed by one of our senior teachers. You must be able to recite the entire Quran with correct Tajweed. If gaps exist, we place you in our Tajweed Mastery program first.

Matching with a Sanad-Holding Scholar

You are matched with one of our senior teachers who themselves hold a connected Ijaazah chain (sanad). Your Ijaazah will link to their chain, extending the unbroken line of Quranic transmission.

Full Quran Recitation (Khatm) — Live Sessions

You recite the entire Quran (30 juz) to your teacher in live one-on-one sessions. The teacher listens carefully and corrects any errors in real time. This phase typically takes 4–12 months depending on session frequency.

Final Examination and Approval

Upon completing the khatm to the teacher’s satisfaction, a formal review is conducted. The teacher and senior scholars certify that your recitation meets the standards required for Ijaazah.

Is an Ijaazah earned online recognised and valid? +
Yes — an Ijaazah’s validity depends entirely on the credentials of the teacher granting it, not on the medium through which the recitation was verified. What matters is: does the teacher hold a verified connected sanad? Are they qualified to assess Tajweed? Is the recitation of the entire Quran completed to the required standard? All three conditions are met in our program. What are the prerequisites for the Ijaazah program? +
To enrol in the Ijaazah program, you must be able to recite the entire Quran with proper Tajweed — specifically Hafs ‘an ‘Asim for the standard Ijaazah. You do not need to have the entire Quran memorised (Hifz is not required), but your recitation must be fluent, accurate, and Tajweed-compliant. How long does it take to earn an Ijaazah? +
For a student who already recites the Quran well with Tajweed, the Ijaazah Khatm typically takes 6–18 months at 3–5 sessions per week, depending on your current level and how many corrections arise during the recitation process. Students who practise regularly and maintain consistency move through the process faster. The goal is correctness, not speed — your teacher will not rush you through Juz that need more work.
Can I become a certified Quran teacher after earning an Ijaazah? +
Yes — the Ijaazah is the primary credential that authorises you to teach and transmit the Quran. With an Ijaazah in hand, you can apply to teach at Islamic schools, masjids, and Quran academies across the USA, Canada, and internationally. Do you provide the full sanad (chain of narration) in the Ijaazah document? +
Yes. The document is written in formal Arabic, signed by the granting scholar, and sealed.
