The Ten Qirat (اÙÙراءات اÙعشر) are the ten authenticated modes of reciting the Holy Quran, each tracing back through a continuous chain of narration to the Prophet Muhammad ï·º. They are not different versions or translations of the Quran â the words and meaning are identical. The differences lie in pronunciation, elongation, letters, and recitation rules, all of which were authorised and practised by the Companions of the Prophet ï·º.
The ten Qirat are categorised into seven main Qirat (as cited in Ibn Mujahid’s famous work “Kitab al-Sab’ah”) with additional authenticated readings bringing the total to ten. Each Qira’ah is named after the Imam who preserved and transmitted it, and each has two primary riwayat (narrations) â making twenty total transmissions that are all mutawatir (mass-narrated) and equally valid.
Learning the Ten Qirat is one of the most advanced and honoured pursuits in Islamic scholarship. It is typically the domain of serious students of Quran who have already earned Ijaazah and want to reach the highest level of Quranic mastery â or those who wish to understand the full scope of Quranic preservation and the miracle of its transmission.
