What New Muslims Learn First
Step 1 — Surah Al-Fatiha (Week 1–2)
Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Quran, recited in every single unit of every prayer. It is 7 verses long. Your very first goal is to memorize and correctly pronounce Al-Fatiha — so that you can begin praying as soon as possible. Your teacher will guide you through each word, and most new Muslims memorize Al-Fatiha within one to two weeks of daily practice.
Step 2 — Short Surahs for Daily Prayer (Week 2–6)
After Al-Fatiha, you learn the short Surahs recited in prayer — Surah Al-Ikhlas (4 verses), Surah Al-Falaq (5 verses), and Surah An-Nas (6 verses). By the end of this stage, you will be able to perform the five daily prayers (Salah) with correct recitation — a milestone that many new Muslims describe as deeply emotional and spiritually transformative.
Step 3 — Noorani Qaida (Month 1–3)
Once you can recite your prayer Surahs, we begin the Noorani Qaida — a structured phonics-based curriculum that teaches you to read Arabic script from scratch. You will learn all 28 Arabic letters, their sounds, and how to connect them into words. Most adults complete the Noorani Qaida in 4–8 weeks with 3 sessions per week. After this, you will be able to read the Quran directly — not just from memory.
Step 4 — Quran Reading with Tajweed (Month 3 onward)
With your Arabic reading foundation in place, you begin reading the Quran itself — starting from Surah Al-Baqarah and progressing at your own pace. Your teacher introduces Tajweed rules gradually as they appear in your reading, so you learn them in context rather than as abstract theory.

I just took my shahada last week. Is it too soon to start?
It is never too soon. In fact, the sooner you begin, the sooner you will be able to pray with correct recitation — which many new Muslims describe as one of the most meaningful experiences of their early journey in Islam.
Do I need to learn Arabic to learn the Quran?
No. You learn to read Arabic script and pronounce Arabic sounds — but this is not the same as learning to speak Arabic fluently. Millions of Muslims around the world recite the Quran in Arabic without being Arabic speakers. You can always add Arabic language study later as a separate course.
