What Are the Ten Qirat — and Why Do They Matter?

The Ten Qirat (القراءات العشر) are the ten authenticated modes of reciting the Holy Quran, each tracing back through a continuous chain of narration to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They are not different versions or translations of the Quran — the words and meaning are identical. The differences lie in pronunciation, elongation, letters, and recitation rules, all of which were authorised and practised by the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ.

The ten Qirat are categorised into seven main Qirat (as cited in Ibn Mujahid’s famous work “Kitab al-Sab’ah”) with additional authenticated readings bringing the total to ten. Each Qira’ah is named after the Imam who preserved and transmitted it, and each has two primary riwayat (narrations) — making twenty total transmissions that are all mutawatir (mass-narrated) and equally valid.

Are the Ten Qirat all authentic — or are some more valid than others? +
All ten Qirat are mutawatir — meaning they are mass-narrated through thousands of individuals at every generation, making any error or fabrication impossible. Every one of the ten recitations is equally authentic, equally valid, and equally represents the speech of Allah. The fact that Hafs ‘an ‘Asim became the global standard is a historical and demographic development, not a theological one. Using any of the ten Qirat in prayer and recitation is completely valid according to the unanimous agreement of Islamic scholars.
Do I need to complete all ten Qirat to get certified, or can I choose specific ones? +
You can pursue Ijaazah in individual Qirat (such as Warsh alone, or Qaloon alone) without completing all ten. Many students begin with one or two Qirat beyond Hafs — typically Warsh and Qaloon — and later expand. How long does it take to complete the Ten Qirat program? +
The complete Ten Qirat program is a multi-year commitment for most students — typically 3–7 years for those studying intensively. Each individual Qira’ah requires its own Khatm (complete recitation) to the teacher’s satisfaction. Students who have a strong Hafs foundation and study 5+ sessions per week progress faster. This is an advanced, long-term scholarly pursuit — not a short course — and is priced and structured accordingly.
What texts are studied alongside the Ten Qirat? +
The classical texts studied alongside the Ten Qirat include: Al-Shatibiyyah (Hirz al-Amani) by Imam al-Shatibi — the foundational poem covering the seven Qirat; Al-Durra al-Mudiyyah by Ibn al-Jazari — covering the additional three Qirat; and Al-Tayyibah al-Nashr by Ibn al-Jazari — covering all ten in comprehensive detail.
